Loved this story. We have irrigation ditches here too and the oldest festival in Washington State is the Irrigation festival. I was the chair for 3 years. Sad though the conservationist passed a law for the draw part of the state to cover all the ditches to slow evaporation and to keep out animal waste. Unfortunately that law pertains to our area too so slowly they are disappearing as they are channeled into culverts.
Our queen has been named the ditch witch for at least the last 30 or so years.....one of my best friends Darcy is a ditchwitch. I will share your story with her she will love it too!
