If you are coming to Albuquerque anytime soon, or if you live here and have somehow been oblivious, you need to check out the alibi - Albuquerque’s weekly alternative newspaper.
I don’t think of it as alternative. To me it’s my city’s newspaper. We also have the Albuquerque Journal – a more conservative and ordinary newspaper that cannot (or will not) capture the heart and soul of Albuquerque, so in my eyes the Journal is the alternative, not the alibi. They started it up as the NuCity weekly in 1992, and it became the alibi in 1995 after being threatened with a lawsuit over it’s name. The founders also started The Onion, but unlike the Onion’s parody format, the alibi is real news.
Check out the current issue online at alibi.com or pick one up just about anywhere in the city, for FREE, at stores, restaurants, and anywhere else that has newspaper racks by their door. You won’t be disappointed. Better yet…get on their email list and be updated weekly the day before the new issue comes out. We now provide our Albuquerque bed and breakfast guests with an alibi hard copy, but weekly online updates are the way to go for travelers even if you have the real thing in your hands when you get here.
Here is some of this week’s email update…
Celtic Celebration at Tijeras Arts Market on July 31 and Aug 1
Try a new way to find places to eat in Albuquerque on your mobile hand held – alibi’s Mobile Chowtown works with iphones, itouch and android os.
Win dinner for two at the Los Ojos in Jemez Springs! (Our old haunt in years gone by – my father- and mother-in-law owned and ran the Los Ojos for years back in the 70’s and 80’s – oops, I’ve dated myself! My mother in law was the creator of the Famous Jemez Burger!)
The weekly alibi updates provide links to the online version of the alibi stories on news, food, music, film, tv, politics, health, sports, technologies and just about everything else important in Albuquerque. There’s no better way to stay on top of what’s happening in Albuquerque than to consult the alibi. If you are coming to Albuquerque sign up for the weekly updates and you will be informed before you get here of all the upcoming events during your visit. What a great planning tool – and you will be Albuquerque smart before you ever draw your first breath of “enchantment”.
I know the best things to do in Albuquerque!
