Christmas things to do in Albuquerque

You can really keep yourself busy in Albuquerque during the Christmas Season. Our Albuquerque bed and breakfast guests are relying on us to point them in the right direction, but the truth is, there are so many options that it would be hard to narrow it down to just a few things. At itsatrip.org, our Convention and Visitor Bureau website, you will find a list of Albuquerque Holiday events and venues – and here are the highlights that I consider to be fun for all…

2010 River of Lights is the ultimate Christmas Light Show at the Albuquerque Bio Park Botanic Gardens is complete with live music every night. Advance tickets at Riveroflights.org. Time – 6 to 10pm now through Dec 30, closed on Dec 24 & 25.

There are plenty of winter garden displays to be seen during the daylight hours at the Botanic Gardens, so don’t skip that, and the Shark Reef Cafe on site will be open for dinner during the River of Lights, so you can “dine with the fishes”. Much better than sleeping with them.

Luminaria Tour of Old Town  – a bus ride through the streets of Old Town and the Country Club to see the spectacle of the streets lined with luminarias on Christmas Eve. All tour times are sold out – so why am I bringing this up? Because I thing it’s worth it to park outside of Old Town or the Country Club area (due south of Old Town south of Central Ave.) and walk the tour. We did this one year and wound up caroling with others along the way, including one of Albuquerque’s own, late jazz Singer, Linda Cotton. Yes…I sang with Linda Cotton.

There is a new and fun Albuquerque Tradition, the Pueblo Gingerbread House Contest at the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center, now in its third year. Since I think this museum of New Mexico’s Native Pueblo People is a must see at any time of the year, you may as well go see the Gingerbread Houses too and vote for your favorite. I went to this last year and was amazed at how creative the builders were. Fun for everyone!
