Here in Albuquerque we like to start winding down for the weekend on Thursday. We would start on Wednesday if we could, but Thursday is the best we can publicly do right now. This summer the winding down is now officially a Wine Down, every Thursday in June and July, (except on July 1).
Albuquerque’s Wine Down is held at the Crossroads Mall at 4th Street and Central Avenue, aka Route 66. The Crossroads Mall in Albuquerque commemorates the major crossing of The Mother Road and U.S. Highway 85. This block long section of Fourth Street in the middle of Downtown Albuquerque was blocked off years ago for pedestrian traffic only. And drinking wine on Thursday evenings. In the Summer there will be craft vendors on the Mall, as well as the usual shops and Galleries. Wining starts at 4:30, and ends at 7:30 – so it is really a three hour happy hour, with food, art music and wine.
If there is a big crowd the party will spill over to the outdoor patio of McGrath’s at the Downtown Hyatt. An ABQ Cab ride from our Albuquerque Bed and Breakfast is only between $12 and $15 and this is what we recommend, because our downtown is a popular place, especially on Summer Nights. Parking is free but scarcer than hen’s teeth, plus we don’t want you drinking and driving.
If you’re not a winer – or beer is your beast – or you are just tired of the crowds and ready to relax, our favorite bar in Albuquerque is just around the corner at 4th and Central. Called The Anodyne, it is the best place to relax and have a game of pool. The atmosphere is very relaxed, you can bring your well behaved pooch, there are couches and chairs like in a living room, and the imported and micro brew selections can’t be beat, with over 100 beer to choose from. You can get a better idea about the Anodyne on their Yelp page.
There are some good music venues downtown too. Start off at the Anodyne and get the music scoop for the evening from locals at the bar. That is your best bet, as Burqueños are friendly, full of opinions and are great to visitors from out of town.
