Rainbow Graffiti in Downtown Albuquerque

Rainbows have been appearing on buildings in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Some like it, some don’t, but I fall into the first category. I would love to find this graffiti artist and have them come pour one on our Albuquerque Bed and Breakfast, Adobe Nido. But it appears a suspect is now in jail. With notoriety comes more risk.

I was first made aware of this rainbow graffiti by our neighbor, who is also an outdoor artist but rather does backyards where he’s asked to paint. He showed me numerous pictures of rainbows on buildings and for me it was love at first sight.

There are claims online of this art form being seen in Taos, NM, Tucson, AZ and San Francisco, CA and at first it was thought that this must be several different artists, but two days before an arrest, the Albuquerque artist was interviewed by phone by our Albuquerque weekly newspaper, the Alibi, and claims “I’ve gone from here to San Francisco.”

The artist had been painting rainbows for about 10 months. The police had been doing an investigation for a while and caught up with a suspect they believe to be the Rainbow Artist, and arrested this person on August 6, 2010. I heard the bond was posted at $40,000, which seems steep to me, but what do I know. The various graffiti artists that had photos posted of these buildings have all seemingly taken them down because I can’t find much online now and in a way I’m glad.

There was a also a thread about this on the Duke City Fix, and a story on KOAT, a local abc tv station. In the Fix, albeit viewed as vandalism, there was quite a bit of sentiment to the affect that I am NOT the only one who likes this art form and I will continue to wish upon a star that a rainbow will appear here on our B&B. A pot of gold would be nice too as long as I’m wishing, but that may be asking too much.

If you would like to see the remaining rainbow buildings when you visit Albuquerque, or view other visually pleasing graffiti murals around town, let us know and we will be glad to point you in the right direction.

      Hi Laura
I would love to swap links. Sorry I took so long to get back to you. I will get your link up asap…right now in fact. I like your site. Lots of nifty stuff, and I like green too. And smoothies? You bet! We often serve them here at our b&b. If you ever come to New Mexico, look us up!

I am not sure about guest blogging. I barely have time for my blog and I haven’t read a book in a year. I need to slow down a bit with the blogs and social media. If I ever get a handle on it all, I’ll reconsider.
      Thanks
      Sarah
