What to do in Albuquerque during the Balloon Fiesta? Try the Albuquerque Gem & Mineral Show!

I LOVE rocks…rocks of all kinds.  I’m game for fossils too, and I can hardly walk a block without finding a pocket-worthy rock I am compelled to pick up and give a new home. I’ve always been like that, ever since I was old enough to leave my own yard unsupervised, and we had a field full of cool rocks and fossils right in our neighborhood. Some things never change. I’m excited that we have a guest here right now at our B&B in Albuquerque who shares my rock passion. He even brought some of his new found Albuquerque treasures down for us to see this morning. I loved it. I am also really excited for the Albuquerque Gem & Mineral Show coming up in a few weeks. Some od Sarah's favorite rocks

On Friday, Saturday & Sunday during the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta, the Albuquerque Gem & Mineral Club is hosting their Fall Show 2012. The Albuquerque Gem & Mineral Show show has free admission and will include 70 venders of minerals, gems, jewelry, lapidary equipment, tools, roughs, slabs, fossils, beads, cabochons, meteorites and more.

Even though it’s not just about the rocks…this show promises to be a rock hound’s heaven, and the hours are perfect for those folks who are coming into Albuquerque for the Balloon Fiesta, because it’s open until 5pm and you can only walk around that Balloon Fiesta Park for so long after the Balloons are done for the day.

When: Fri, Sat & Sun, Oct 5-7, 2012
Where: Expo NM (State Fairgrounds in Albuquerque)
Creative Arts Center
Free Admission
Time: 9am-5pm

Nautilus and fossilsSo, the shows aren’t always as fun as finding “wild rocks” with Mother Nature, right? But there will ALWAYS be something there at the show that you’d never be able to find on your own, so go, hunt indoors and have a great time.

The NM State Fairgrounds, aka Expo NM, can be a bit confusing to out-of-towners, and we get lost sometimes too, so don’t get frustrated. Just enter the Fairgrounds from San Pedro NE between Central and Lomas. Although there are several Entry Gates on San Pedro, don’t despair…there usually will be signs to direct you to the right gate/building/parking, and a default entrance can always be Gate 3, (don’t get stuck in the flea market parking because you’ll have a really long walk if you do.)

If you miss the signs, the Creative Arts Center is sideways/south across the street from the Manuel Lujan Exhibit Center which is HUGE and on the corner of Main Street and Heritage Ave of the fairgrounds. Main Street is the only tree-lined street on the whole fairground property, so you can’t miss it. If you find the Hispanic Arts Building, behind it on Heritage will be the Creative Arts Center.

Enjoy yourselves and go get some rocks and, of course, ROCK ON!
